Update: Highway One is now 100% open throughout Monterey County. Read this post for more information. UPDATE: Caltrans reports that Highway One from Palo Colorado to Bixby Creek Bridge will be closed until at least mid-April. Businesses in Big Sur remain open and can be reached via Highway One coming from San Simeon. Businesses in northern Big Sur such as Rocky Point Restaurant also remain open and can be reached via Highway One in Carmel.

Segment of Highway 1 Closed

On March 16, 2011 at 5:15 p.m., a mudslide occurred at Highway 1 in Big Sur, 12 miles South of Carmel at Rocky Point near the 60 mile marker. No injuries were reported. The affected section of Highway 1 is currently closed and CalTrans workers are on the scene. Big Sur can still be accessed via King City or San Simeon. All businesses throughout Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey County are open. For up-to-the minute road conditions, visit the Caltrans website.
  • CalTrans crews are assessing the length of road closure and will know more this evening, March 17.
  • Businesses north and south of the road closure are open.
  • Businesses south of the road closure can be accessed by Fergusson-Nacimiento Road from King City or Highway One from San Simeon.
  • Visitor access to the area north of the road closure, use Highway 68 near Carmel.
