Update: Highway One is now 100% open throughout Monterey County. Read this post for more information. Highway One is once again closed at Alder Creek and continues to be closed at Rocky Creek. Access to Big Sur via motor vehicle is currently via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road only. Pedestrians and cyclists may access Big Sur via the Rocky Creek sections at specific times of day.

Accessing Big Sur via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road

To get to Big Sur via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, take Highway 101 to the Jolon/County Road G14 exit. County Road G14 will become Mission Road. From there, turn left onto Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. See this interactive Google map for a visualization the current route to Big Sur. Be aware that Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, while scenic, is also winding and very narrow. To learn more about what to expect, see Steve and Tieyan's photos or Chris Weld's ride report, both of which feature excellent photographs of the route.

Alder Creek Closure

Caltrans announced late Thursday that Highway One was closed at Alder Creek due to a landslide. One side of the closure is 1.3 miles south of the San Luis Obispo/Monterey County line; the other is at Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, 4.5 miles south of Lucia, 23 miles north of the county line and 40 miles north of Hearst Castle.

Rocky Creek: pedestrian and cyclist access only

The Rocky Creek section of Highway One is currently under construction. Residents and visitors may pass over this section of Highway One on foot or on bicycle at 7am and at 4pm daily. This offers a great opportunity for hikers and cyclists to experience Highway One with almost no automobile traffic.
