All Weekend

The Monterey County Fair & Event Center goes green this weekend as the Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival struts into town. The two-day event brings music, dance and athletic events from the mystical lands of Scotland and Ireland to Monterey County. Don’t miss the intense competitions in bagpiping, Highland dancing and athletic events like the caber toss.  Saturday and Sunday from 9am-5pm. 2004 Fairgrounds Road, Monterey. $15 in advance and $20 at the gate.

The sounds of Bach continue to permeate throughout Carmel-by-the-Sea and beyond during the Carmel Bach Festival. The 15 day event wraps up on Saturday with a “Best of the Fest” performance at the Sunset Center. July 18-August 1. Various venues and ticket prices.

Standup comedian Steve Hofstetter bring his hilarious show to the Planet Gemini Friday and Saturday nights! The Monterey Bay Aquarium stays up past its bedtime Saturday and Sunday nights for Evenings by the Bay. This fun summer series extends its normal hours to 8pm and offers delicious sustainable seafood bites, wine tastings and live music. On Saturday, funky jam band the Joint Chiefs perform and on Sunday jazz musician Bill Spencer performs. Saturday and Sunday from 6pm-8pm. 886 Cannery Row, Monterey. Free with paid admission.

Friday

Tonight Carmel Plaza continues with their popular their Summer Live Music Series with music from reggae band Jonah & the Whalewatchers. Nearby Bistro Beaujolais provides yummy appetizers while Hahn Family Wines pours delicious wines. 5pm-7pm. Ocean Avenue and Mission Street, Carmel-by-the-Sea. Free event admission and $15 for food and drink package.

Saturday

Get ready and get set for the Salinas Valley Half Marathon! Hundreds of runners and walkers head for the hills this morning for an exhilarating 13.1 mile run through Monterey County’s wine country. The race begins at the Soledad Mission and ends with a finish line party at Pessagno Winery. 8am. River Road, Salinas Valley.  Free for spectators. Registration fees are $95 in advance and $110 at the expo and the day of the race.

Head to Big Sur’s Fernwood Tavern tonight for a free concert by the Dave Holodiloff Bluegrass Band. 10pm. 47200 Highway 1, Big Sur. Free Event.

Sunday

Set out for a morning hike through the tremendous trees of Mill Creek with guides from the Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks District. The hike will take visitors through towering redwoods with incredible views of the Palo Colorado Canyon and the Pacific Ocean. The 5.5 mile hike is expected to last 3-4 hours.  Don’t forget to wear good hiking shoes and to bring water, lunch and snacks. 10am-2pm. Mill Creek Preserve, Carmel. Free event.

Enjoy live music in Seaside this afternoon during Sunday Blues in the Park. Today they feature a performance from the Free Sound Band and the Zydeco Flames in Laguna Grande Park alongside several arts and crafts vendors. 1pm-4:30pm. Canyon Del Rey Blvd., Seaside. Free event.

The Henry Miller Library welcomes Andi Teran for their “Under the Persimmon Tree” series. Tonight the Los Angeles based author talks about her book “Ana of California,” a new coming-of-age work exploring the modern farming movement in California. 4pm-6pm. 48603 Highway One, Big Sur. $10 suggested donation.
