  • Description:

Tomáseen Foley’s Irish Times brings to exhilarating life, on stage, the joyous memory of traditional gatherings at weddings, wakes, and solstice celebrations, when the neighbors would bring with them their instruments — fiddles, bodhráns, guitars, and tin whistles for an evening of fiery music, stirring ballads, foot-stomping traditional dances, and — of course, stories — from the man who has been called Ireland’s Garrison Keillor and a master of the Irish narrative, Tomáseen Foley.

Storyteller Tomáseen Foley was born on a small farm in the remote parish of Teampall an Ghleanntáin in the West of Ireland. Rego Irish Records says he is “a master of the Irish narrative and a keeper of the flame for a priceless piece of Irish culture”. Each year from Thanksgiving until Christmas his show A Celtic Christmas plays to critical acclaim and packed concert halls around the US. His show A Saint Patrick Celebration tours from late February through mid-March; two other shows, Tomáseen Foley’s Irish Times, and his one-man Lines from my Grandmother’s Forehead tour throughout the remainder of the year. The Oregon Cabaret has developed a hit musical from his story Parcel From America. He has released two CDs: Parcel From America, and a live recording, The Priest and the Acrobat.

William Coulter is an internationally acclaimed master of the steel-string guitar. In 2005, he was awarded a Grammy for a track he contributed to a solo guitar compilation of Henry Mancini music called The Pink Guitar. His most recent recording Toward the Sun, with Irish flutist Brian Finnegan, is an eclectic collection of traditional and new tunes. Coulter has been Music Director for Tomaseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas since 1998, and has performed with the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, Apollo’s Fire and many other ensembles. Collaborations have been a mainstay of his career including tours and recordings with Gourd Music artists Neal Hellman and Barry and Shelley Phillips; classical guitar virtuoso Benjamin Verdery, and Irish flute wizard Brian Finnegan. Tours have taken him around the states and to Ireland, Europe, Taiwan and most recently to Chile. Coulter teaches classical guitar at UC Santa Cruz and at many summer camps and festivals. Upcoming projects include a new recording with Native Irish singer Eilis Kennedy, and tours and a debut recording with the Canadian violin virtuoso Edwin Huizinga. Coulter earned degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and UC Santa Cruz.

Edwin Huizinga is living a life goal of bringing music to the people. Edwin can be seen onstage performing with Canada’s biggest indie rock bands, the world’s greatest baroque orchestras, some of the most innovative unique chamber orchestras, and also as a soloist performing around the world. One of Edwin’s accolades this season was performing with Stevie Wonder! 2016 will include a North American tour of his cross-genre violin and guitar duo Liquid Gold, touring internationally with the Wooden Sky, and performing with his baroque band Acronym, as a founding member. He is also Artistic Director of a consistently sold out chamber music series in Toronto called Stereo Live, as well as Artistic Director of a kids camp in Big Sur, California. This season he will also be performing with The Knights NYC Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Brandywine Baroque Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, Carmel Bach Festival, Trinity Alps Chamber players, and more. Edwin is also a founding member of Classical Revolution and is so excited to be making his first appearance with the Smithsonian chamber players!
