Now in its eleventh year, Monterey History Fest has grown into a festival that offers a variety of programs for both residents and visitors to experience Monterey’s unique cultural heritage and historic resources. History Fest has developed a schedule designed to bring Monterey's past to life during this community-wide event.

All events are free of charge unless otherwise noted. Historic walking tours of the wharf area and Custom House Plaza will take place both Saturday and Sunday at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Visitors can also enjoy free admission to the Custom House, Pacific House, Colton Hall and the Presidio of Monterey Museum from 10am-4pm each day. The remaining schedule includes special lectures, living history reenactments, storytelling and workshops designed to delight children, fascinate the history buff and intrigue the family genealogist!

Civil War and CHAS (California Historical Artillery Society) encampments will be set up all weekend long at the Lower Presidio Historic Park. Several tents and artifacts will be on display for the curious historian. Musket and cannon firing demonstrations will also take place at 11:30am and 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. For additional information, visit Historic Monterey’s Web site or call 831-646-5640.

Saturday, October 8

Take a van tour to the Upper Presidio and visit the Buffalo Soldier Barracks, Soldier Field, Fort Mervine, the Sloat Monument and the Berlin Wall Monument. Don't miss out; this is one of the only opportunities civilians have to view the Presidio. Tours begin at 9:30am and 11:30am. Call 831-646-5640 for reservations.

Bring the kids out to the Pacific House for Native American storytelling. Puppets will keep both children and adults entertained with stories from the past. Shows begin at 11am, 12:30pm and 2pm.

Join the walking tour to the Lower Presidio where a historian will take guests to see the sites of Vizcaino's landing, first burial of the first non-Native American, fortifications of El Castillo and Fort Mervine and the Father Serra and Sloat Monuments. Tours begin at 1:30pm and 3pm. Call 831-646-5640 for reservations.

Sunday, October 9

Don't miss the last day for Native American storytelling. Puppets will keep both children and adults entertained with stories from the past. Shows begin at 11am, 12:30pm and 2pm.

At 1pm head over to the JACL Hall on Adams Street and enjoy a lecture/walking tour that will highlight the Japanese heritage in Monterey. The tour includes a visit to the neighborhood that was once a nibon-machi, or Japan Town.

Live one of the most important events in California's history as actors recreate the California Constitutional Convention at Colton Hall at 2pm. Admission to the re-enactment is free, but limited space is available. For reservations please call 831-646-5640 or email museumpt@ci.monterey.ca.us
