Insider Tip
Question:
The Recreation Trail is great for cycling, but I'm looking for something new. Where's a bike trail that will allow me to connect with nature?
Answer:
The former Fort Ord permits cyclists access to spectacular bike trails. It’s absolutely beautiful with several canyons, oak trees and views of the Salinas Valley. – Doug Horner, Research Professor/Avid Biker
More Biking Options
Cyclists in Monterey have many more options than the Recreation Trail that runs along the coast. On- and off-road bike trails at Fort Ord provide challenges and great views of the surrounding countryside. Cyclists can take in stunning vistas biking along 17-Mile Drive and the Del Monte Forest, open on weekdays. Carmel Valley offers country roads with low traffic, fantastic scenery, and some challenging steep climbs. Highway 1 through Big Sur is used frequently by cyclists who are touring the area. Mountain bikers can ride into the heart of Big Sur's beauty on trails at Garrapata State Park and Andrew Molera State Park. The US Forest Service has a comprehensive list of even more mountain biking trails within Big Sur, and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County has excellent bike maps for the entire county.
