Established in 1883, as the Chautauqua Museum, the Museum was created to house collections of nature’s wonders and to make them available for study.  Join us today by coming to explore the birds and wildlife, plants, geology and cultural richness that make the California Central Coast region unique in the world. The Museum's permanent exhibitions that showcase the unique and curious aspects of the natural history of the California Central Coast.  Some of our permanent exhibits include one of the most extensive bird collections on display on the West Coast, exhibits on whales, mollusks, mammals, Native Americans and a native plant garden.  We also have a rotating exhibit that changes every 4-6 months.  We will gladly arrange free field trips for school groups and can host other groups for fun and engaging educational tours.  Additionally,  the Museum hosts periodic lectures and classes offered by internationally acclaimed scientists and local scientific institutions.
