Baywood Cellars exemplifies the Cotta family's three-quarter century commitment to quality and success. Cotta Properties was founded in 1925 by Joe Cotta Sr., and after many successful years of growing wine grapes and other agricultural commodities the John and James Cotta (Grandsons of Joe Sr.) started producing wine under their Las Viñas label in 1986. With John Cotta as winemaker and James Cotta as vineyard manager, Las Viñas immediately won awards in all of the top national and international competitions including "Best of Region "wines of the Lodi-Woodbridge region an unprecedented three years in a row in the 1988, '89 and '90 California State Fair wine competitions.
Awards
In pursuit of higher quality and perfection, John and James started vinifying grapes from the family's own central coast vineyards under the "Vineyard Select" Baywood label, and the highest quality Methode Champenoise sparkling wines under the Las Viñas label from the Napa Valley, which in turn immediately won awards in the major wine competition circuits. Seeing the potential of the Central Coast as being", comparable if not superior to the Napa and Sonoma growing regions" John has focused his wine making talents and efforts on producing only ultra-premium wines from Monterey County and the Central Coast.
Winemaking
President and wine maker, John Cotta has over 20 years experience producing wine in all of California's major viticulture regions. His vast knowledge, combined with the most up-to-date wine-making technology available such as Krones filler-corker machines and MEB rotary star labeling equipment, gives Baywood Cellars the bottling capacity of up to 150 bottles per minute. With temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and French Oak cooperage Baywood can produce and store more than 300,000 cases annually. Using state-of-the-art equipment and time-tested old-world techniques, John has been able to produce wines rated among the finest in the world.
The Family
John and James Cotta, with the help of their father Joe Cotta Jr., currently farms over 2,000 acres of Varietal wine grapes throughout California, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Symphony and the traditional Douro region Port varieties. The family commitment to viticulture spans over three generations which includes state-of-the-art drip irrigation, trellising, integrated pest management and soil fertility programs. This provides consistent, high quality crops year after year. |

The focus of the Bernardus Vineyards & Winery is to create wines that flatter the palate and stimulate the imagination. Our Marinus Estate Bordeaux-style red wine is the centerpiece of Ben Pon's dream. It is complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from cool coastal climate vineyards. We also offer limited bottlings of small production and vineyard designate wines, which are available exclusively through the tasting room and wine club...taste a dream.
History
Owner Ben Pon appreciates wine as an art - a form of art that transcends the ordinary. His dream with Bernardus is to make a red wine equal to the finest from Bordeaux. To achieve this purpose, Ben, a Dutchman who could have planted vineyards anywhere in the world, has chosen the Carmel Valley for his estate vineyards and winery. Since the early 1970's, there has been a growing awareness of the outstanding potential for Bordeaux varieties from this new viticultural appellation. The Bernardus estate vineyards of Marinus and Featherbow Ranch are located in the Cachagua region of the Carmel Valley. We have been told that Cachagua is the Spanish word Native Americans used for deep or hidden water. It has been said that Native Americans believed that all things in nature were sacred and interrelated. Their respect for balance in nature is carried on in the vineyards of Bernardus. More than 300 live oaks have been preserved to thrive among carefully planted vines.
Of the 220 acres, 50 acres have been planted to vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Bernardus ventures forth as the fifth winery to establish vineyards in this sacred valley. While growing Bordeaux-style varieties in our estate vineyards, at Bernardus we are committed to cultivating Chardonnay in cool coastal climates, specifically the Monterey County growing region. Grapes from other superior coastal appellations in California are used to add nuances to the Bernardus blend. The vineyard components are then complemented by many different yeasts and oaks during the winemaking procedure.
Winemaker Dean DeKorth integrates his experience working with the methods and practices of Bernardus winemaking with his own personal intuition and technical expertise. Dean DeKorth, an American, is a French winemaker—all of his early impressions about wine came from his education and apprenticeship in France. A very important part of Dean’s Burgundian training was focused on distinguishing aromas and flavor qualities, as well as textural elements in the wine. With this old-world sense of taste, Dean seeks to make wines that flatter the palate. A viticulturalist, enologist, scholar, craftsman, and artist, Dean DeKorth brings to his winemaking a time-honored knowledge of wine and an endless passion – a passion labeled Bernardus.
At Bernardus the textural element-"the mouth feel'-is the most important expression of wine.
At a time when there is an increasing conversion of established French wine estates from seasoned wooden tanks to rows of stainless steel, Bernardus Winery was constructed to create traditional wines. Wines are aged in oak tanks and barrels specially crafted for Bernardus in the French region of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Oak is purchased from many coopers in France to allow for blending of different flavors, or "the spice rack approach".
It is the goal of Ben Pon to create wines from the promising viticultural region of Carmel Valley that will rival in style and quality the finest traditional wines. With an unequaled commitment and the resources and talent to support this commitment, Bernardus is embarking upon the next frontier in American winemaking.

Relax, unwind, and uncork a flavor bomb. When it comes to enjoying the big, rich fruit that's Blackstone's signature, no occasion is too small.
Blackstone Winery was founded in 1990 with the goal of producing approachable, full-bodied, well-balanced wines. We believe in good friends, good food and juicy conversations-and our wines are the ideal complement.
Our Monterey County winery might be thought of as a friendly neighborhood destination that just happens to crush over 35,000 tons of grapes a year. This capacity lets us take advantage of the amazing grape quality of the Central Coast. You can sample the results in our spacious tasting room, and peruse our unique gift shop for that special gift or gourmet treat. Work it all off in a stroll around the grounds, which feature a pond, vineyards, a gazebo, and a rolling lawn where local events are often held. Whether you're interested in a wine for everyday, to give as a gift, or to save for a special occasion, you'll find it in our portfolio.
Our Winemaker Select wines are fruit-forward, easy to drink, and food-friendly - perfect for everyday celebrations. The cornerstone of this portfolio is Blackstone's California Merlot, the number-one-selling domestic red wine in the United States at any price.
The microclimates and soils of Sonoma County produce a wide range of flavors and our Sonoma Reserve wines highlight the best of them. Artisan techniques and individual barrel selection let the character of each vineyard come through, producing wines with bold fruit, complexity and a rich texture.
In addition to our Winemaker Select and Sonoma Reserve wines, which can be found in fine wine and retail shops across the U.S., we also produce a collection of wines sold exclusively at our winery. These Tasting Room Wines come from California's premiere appellations and are produced in limited quantities.
We produce Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Riesling, Malvasia Bianca, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, a special blend we call Rubric, and Port.

History
In the late 1970's, Bob and Patty Brower set out to fulfill their dream. Originally from the East Coast, they had a passion for wine and admired the French hospitality encountered while traveling in Europe. They saw the potential in Monterey County as a quality wine growing region, and in 1982 began building what is now known as Château Julien Wine Estate in Carmel Valley, California.
The winery's first release came in 1985 with Chardonnay and Merlot from the 1982 vintage. Today, the entire process of wine production takes place on the 16-acre estate, including the aging of nearly 2000 oak barrels of wine. Winemaker Bill Anderson joined the Browers in 1982, and produced the winery's first 100% Merlot with the premier vintage. Bill continues to produce wine at Château Julien Wine Estate, and has played an integral part in establishing Merlot as the winery's flagship varietal.
The Estate
Château Julien Wine Estate is located on 16 acres at the foot of the majestic Carmel Valley mountains. The winery boasts breathtaking vistas of the lush green valley where sunsets are unforgettable and rainbows bounce off the hills...
Bob and Patty Brower's commitment to hospitality began when the winery opened its doors in 1982. The building itself is a replica of a home on the French/Swiss border. The warmth and hospitality exudes from the moment guests enter the Chateau. A magnificent grand fireplace, open beam ceilings and well appointed antiques set the stage for tasting Private Reserve wines. A hand blown stained glass window sits majestically at the opposite end of the tasting room, or "Great Hall." There is no tasting bar in the Great Hall, but rather an eighteen-foot antique mahogany table for tasting wines. A comfortable, inviting atmosphere is extended to each and every guest. The winery is open to visitors daily for wine tasting and tours, and all guests are welcome to enjoy the ambiance of the garden cobblestone courtyard off of the Chateau. Within the Chateau, there are several separate venues for hosting private events. Each room offers a unique setting for guests to enjoy.
Nestled amongst six acres of Sangiovese grapes is the winery's "Chai" (pronounced "shay"). All of Château Julien's barrels are set in the Chai for aging. Built one story into the ground, the Chai is kept at a naturally cool temperature and humidity for aging wines. The walls are 12"-15" thick, with a natural ventilation system extending from the west of the building to the east. The addition of the Chai in 1998 has enabled the winery to barrel ferment one hundred percent of the Chardonnays and age wine longer in oak. Custom ambiance lighting and the dramatic stacking of oak barrels, make the Chai an ideal setting for private events. |

At Galante Vineyards our philosophy is simple: grow the finest grapes possible and let the fruit express itself in the wine. Since all of our grapes are estate grown, each bottle of wine we produce embodies the characteristics of our unique region, exhibiting the natural flavors that are born from the land. The Galante Family has a long history in the Monterey area. Owner Jack Galante's great grandfather, J.F. Devendorf, was the founder of the town of Carmel. He later built the Pine Inn and the prestigious Highlands Inn. In 1969, Jack's parents purchased a 700-acre cattle ranch in rustic Carmel Valley. While still maintaining a working cattle ranch, the Galantes, in 1983, began growing premium grapes on their property, specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1994, Jack Galante decided to build a winery and use some of his grapes to produce ultra-premium estate bottled wines. Today Galante is recognized as one of the premier Cabernet Sauvignon producers in Monterey County and all of California.
Estate Wines
e produce very limited quantities of Estate Bottled 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from two single vineyards, Red Rose Hill and Blackjack Pasture. We also produce our Rancho Galante from a blend of Cabernet grapes from several of our other vineyard parcels. In addition, we produce extremely limited quantities of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Petit Sirah. Our philosophy is to grow the finest grapes possible and let them speak for themselves through the wine. Several factors influence the quality of the grapes grown at our vineyards. Due to the extreme daily temperature variations in Cachagua (upper Carmel Valley), the growing season is very long with harvest normally occurring in mid October. This long "hang time" causes the grapes to ripen slowly, intensifying their rich berry flavors. We also thin the crop to an average of two tons per acre providing a low yield of very high quality grapes. We do not use pesticides or herbicides in the vineyards and only irrigate when needed. These methods, and others, combine to produce the highest quality grapes.
Our wine label is very special to us and reflects our roots and our efforts at Galante Vineyards. The image of the label is a photograph of real leather, hand-tooled by a California saddle maker with conchos in each corner designed by a local silversmith. The artwork for Red Rose Hill and Blackjack Pasture was created by world-renowned artist, G.H. Rothe. Our vineyard names are also meaningful; Blackjack Pasture is adjacent to the field where a favorite roping horse, Blackjack, spent the last of her 36 years. Red Rose Hill rises above a field of crimson rose bushes (just a small portion of our thousands of rose bushes), and Rancho Galante celebrates our beginnings as a cattle ranch, known as "Rancho Galante". Even our back labels incorporate our cowboy image by including a special "Cowboy Philosophy" hand picked by owner Jack Galante.
We sell our wines direct to consumers and through select outlets in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East. Special pricing is available through our futures program and quantity discounts.
Tasting Room
Come visit our Wine Tasting Room and Western Emporium in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea. Located off Dolores between Ocean and Seventh Ave., Galante Vineyards has opened its doors to Carmels first "Wine Tasting Room." We cordially invite you and your guests to stop by to say "hi" and to taste our Carmel Valley Estate wines.
Galante Vineyards has always had a very simple philosophy: grow the finest grapes and let the fruit express itself in the wine. This approach has won Galante a reputation for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc in Monterey County.
The Galante family has a long history in Carmel. It was around 1900 that Jack Galante's Great Grandfather, J. Frank Devendorf, discovered the white sands of Carmel Beach. With a dream in mind, he and his partner Frank Powers created the town of Carmel. We look forward to honoring this family legacy and to continuing to make history in Carmel with our Wine Tasting Room. |
