In his early years, Frank Knight loved to explore the beautiful Monterey Peninsula through biking, kayaking and surfing. Wanting to share his experiences with others, Frank began a small rental business delivering bicycles to the local hotels for the enjoyment of visitors. Today, that business, Adventures by the Sea, assists visitors to explore the Monterey Peninsula by land, by sea, and by party.
By land, pedal a bicycle or a surrey along the recreation trail, along the coast of Pacific Grove and into breathtaking 17-Mile Drive.
By sea, explore the kelp forest and abundant marine life along Cannery Row or Stillwater Cove by renting an ocean kayak or catch some waves with an expert surf instructor.
By party, the Pirate Cove beach house and outdoor setup is the perfect setting for hosting Classic California Beach Party, team building programs, wedding receptions, reunions, company picnics, and more!

Bayonet Black Horse, the storied golf club located on the scenic Monterey Peninsula, announces that all 36 holes (18 Bayonet, 18 Black Horse) have re-opened to the public on December 20 following the completion of a three-phase, $13 million renovation by Bates Golf Design Group.
One of the largest scope and scale golf course construction projects to hit the Monterey area in years, Bates Golf Design made dramatic alterations to hole routings, corridors and view sheds. New tees, bunkers and green complexes were installed, and intrusive copse of non-native trees were removed to provide unobstructed views of Monterey Bay, downtown Monterey and Point Pinos from a number of holes on both courses.
The agronomic changes were equally as impactful, as all kikuyu and poa annua grasses were replaced with Jacklin T1 Bentgrass, a rich, dark-green strain developed specifically to compete with these invasive, regional species. Both courses feature the Jacklin bentgrass on all tees, fairways and greens, and Bayonet Black Horse is one of only two facilities in the entire region to utilize this preferred turf from tees through greens. To establish a new, divergent look from Bayonet, Black Horse will sport dense, fescue rough that will provide an unmistakable links-style feel to the layout.
“We are excited to re-introduce area golfers and those visiting the Monterey Peninsula to the new-look Bayonet Black Horse Golf Club,” says Dick Fitzgerald, project director for Seaside Resort Development, the entity directing the renovation. “The whole-sale enhancements to Bayonet and Black Horse are staggering and golfers will discover two challenging, strategic and well-conditioned layouts that will rapidly emerge as ‘must play’ courses of the Monterey Peninsula.”
Although various composite layouts allowed for play during construction, this is the first time both new and improved 18-hole courses will be open at the same time. Specifically, the full extent of the work performed by lead architect and principal Gene Bates on Bayonet’s famed back-nine and Black Horse’s picturesque front-nine will be on full display. The enhancements promise to garner similar high praise from golfers and critics as his earlier renovations of Bayonet’s front and Black Horse’s back.
“Bayonet and Black Horse are now complementary; both are challenging and appealing from an aesthetic standpoint and are on the level with each other,” says Bates, who’s worked on more than 150 projects worldwide during his illustrious design career. “But the style of the greens and bunkers make the courses distinctly different. Bayonet has traditional, deep, challenging bunkers. The greens are tamely contoured because the layout, from tee to green, is challenging enough that severe greens would be too punishing and not reward good shots or heroic recoveries.”
He continues: “On Black Horse, the bunkers are large with serrated edges and clustered to draw one’s eye to them. The green surfaces have a lot of movement, conversely, because there is plenty of room off the tee and the bunkers are less severe.”
For more information about Bayonet Black Horse, visit www.bayonetblackhorse.com or call 831.899.7271 (PAR 1).
About Bayonet Golf Course
Bayonet, with its narrow playing corridors and steep, penal bunkering, has long been considered the most difficult test of golf on the Monterey Peninsula. The par-72, nearly 7,100-yard course has retained its famous bite after the recent renovation by award-winning architect Gene Bates, but playability and strategic options have been greatly improved. The uphill, dogleg right, 476-yard, par-4 ninth hole exemplifies the course’s significant challenge.
About Black Horse Golf Course
Black Horse, a 7,000-yard-plus, par-72 layout, features sweeping vistas of the Pacific and is highlighted by fescue-framed fairways, bunkers with distinctive, serrated edges and slickly-contoured greens. The par-3 15th, created during the renovation, faces the bay and is sure to emerge as one of the great holes on the Peninsula. |

The 29th Annual California International Airshow in Salinas, will be held on August 7th, 8th & 9th. The Salinas Airshow has become one of the premiere aviation events on the west coast, attracting the top military and civilian airshow performers in the United States. As a community airshow it has raised over $8 million for local charities.
Featuring
US Navy Blue Angels
The Blue Angel Demonstration Team will return to the 29th Annual California International Airshow and grace the skies over the Central Coast with superb formation and opposing solo routines. The Blue Angel routine includes the Diamond four-ship formation, which provides a close look of low level, close maneuvers for the air show enthusiast. As the four ship formation is out repositioning itself for the next precision fly-by, the two opposing solos will capture your attention as they do many of their maneuvers at closure speed of over 1000 mph and all six Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornets will join together for their famous Delta Formation or the Ho-Bo (Head-on Breakout). Don't miss the return of the world famous US Navy Blue Angels!
Fat Albert Airlines
An integral part of the Blue Angels is affectionately known as "Fat Albert Airlines," the squadron's blue and gold Marine Corps C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. Be sure to check out Fat Albert's demonstration including the short runway landing. Fat Albert can also move almost just as fast on the ground in reverse. Fat Albert demonstrations will be a part of the Friday night show, and both Saturday and Sundays shows.
Robosaurus
Robosaurus makes his triumphant return to Salinas for the “Summertime Blues”. Robo is a fire breathing Dino-bot that stands over 40 ft tall. He takes massive bites out of metal with those steel choppers. You better believe Robo is car-nivorous! Better not leave your wheels too close to this 60,000 monster – he’ll make it lunch. Watch Robo Friday – Saturday and Sunday as he enjoys charbroiling his own treats!
US Army Golden Knights
The Golden Knights will amaze the crowds of Salinas when they jump off on a aircraft that’s about 12,500 feet above the surface of the earth. The parachute team races to the ground at speeds exceeding 120 mph. 2009 is the 50th anniversary for the Golden Knights. Now, the Golden Knights spend more than 230 days jumping at air shows and events supporting the US Army recruiting goals
Mike Goulian
Your chance to meet one of the Top Red Bull Racers from around the World, Mike Goulian! Watch his dazzling aerobatic performance in his brand new 2009 Extra 300 SC! Enjoy Mikey’s incredible display of control as he puts the Extra thru it’s paces while pushing it to the limits of airspeed and flight attitude.
Ed Hamill

So you know that this year will be special with the Air Force Reserve Biplane Show. Ed proudly represents the over 70,000 Reservists who serve our country on both a part time and full time basis.
A-10 Thunderbolt (Wart Hog)
The A-10 Thunderbolt II is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. They’re simple, effective and survivable twin-engine jet aircraft that can be used against all ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles. You’ll see examples of the Wart Hog’s flying prowess along with a pyrotechnic display. Don’t miss your chance to see the “Wart Hog” in action!
Wall of Fire/Friday Night Fireworks
Get ready to enjoy an evening of incredible performances and then as the sun begins to set, the skies will come alive! The Friday Night Fireworks Extravaganza will light up with sky in synch to a professionally produced soundtrack. And the Biggest pyrotechnic event of them all, the Wall of Fire, caps off the evening sending explosive charges down the showline for an incredible inferno where everyone can FEEL THE HEAT!
Bob Carlton/Vertigo Airshows
There’s nothing else like it in the world! With its exclusive retractable twin jet engine pod, the Super Salto jet sailplane performs both a screaming jet-powered low show, and a classic sailplane aerial ballet. Watch the Super Salto do hammerheads, loops and rolls, things you’d never expect a sailplane to do. Then Bob will spool the engine back and perform a graceful sailplane ballet. All with the same plane – no need for a tow plane for this guy!
Gene Soucy and Theresa Stokes
Check out the man who has won more awards than any other active airshow pilot. They call him “Mr Airshow”. Gene Soucy…. He’ll take to the skies in his modified Grumman ag crop duster named “Showcat” and make a “little noise”. Gene also performs with Teresa Stokes in an amazing Wingwalking act. Teresa climbs all over the wings of the huge biplane, even performing a headstand, while Gene performs breathtaking aerobatics. Always a crowd favorite!

Each July, the West comes alive with the California Rodeo Salinas. One of the most prestigious stops on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) circuit and part of the Wrangler ProRodeo Million Dollar Tour, the Rodeo (locally pronounced ro-day-oh) attracts more than 700 top-ranked professional cowboys and cowgirls competing for over $400,000 in prize money annually.
An outgrowth of the Spanish ranchero days when the semi-wild herds of cattle were gathered for branding, ear-marking and castration, the word rodeo is Spanish for "round-up." Today, the Salinas stop is the largest rodeo in the state, and includes the traditional events like barrel racing, saddle-bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and bull riding. 2010 will mark the 100th year of Rodeo in Salinas. Big plans are already underway for this special anniversary where the California Rodeo Salinas will celebrate 100 Years of Tradition. Save the dates for the Centennial Gala May 22, 2010, the resurrection of the Colmo del Rodeo parade on July 10, 2010 and the 100th California Rodeo Salinas July 15-18, 2010.
Other-fun filled family events during the Rodeo's Big Week include an evening of cowboy poetry Sunday July 11, 2010, the daily Horse Parade and more. For more information, please call 800-771-8807 or 831-775-3100 or visit www.CARODEO.com.
The dates for the 100th California Rodeo Salinas are July 15, 16, 17, & 18th, 2010. |
