For the 19th year, Carmel's Rio Grill gives runners the chance to get a jump start on their New Year's resolutions with its New Year's Day Resolution Run. Burn off holiday calories while helping children in need; all proceeds from the event benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
Competitive runners can test themselves with a 6.8 mile footrace. Running just for the fun of it? Try the 3 mile family fun run. The course begins at Crossroads Shopping Village in Carmel, and takes runners along trails and sandy beaches, all with views of the glorious Carmel coastline. There will be award certificates in every age division.
Participants' registration fees ($30 for adults, $20 for children, $35 on race day) include a prize drawing and a full brunch. The race begins at 9am. Register online from now until midnight on December 29.
This run is only the first of many running events held throughout the year in Monterey County. Everyone has heard of the legendary Big Sur International Marathon and its sister race, the Big Sur Half Marathon, and the highly competitive multi-sport events Wildflower Triathlon and Triathlon at Pacific Grove. More intimate running events punctuate the rest of the year, giving racers a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery at every time of the year.
Rio Grill's Resolution Run kicks off the year on January 1. February brings the Together With Love 10k and 5k in Pacific Grove. In March it's time for the messy, fun five mile Big Sur Mud Run. After April's Big Sur International Marathon, runners can get a very different view of Monterey County with May's Heart & Sole 10k and 5k in Salinas or the Wildflower Triathlon at Lake San Antonio. Locals and visitors celebrate July 4 with the Spreckles 4th of July 10K. September brings both the Triathlon at Pacific Grove with its infamous kelp crawl and the Stevenson Run in the Forest 10K and 5K through the scenery of Pebble Beach. October brings another visually dazzling 10K and 5K, the Big Sur River Run. Just before Thanksgiving, runners from around the world converge on Monterey Bay for the Big Sur Half Marathon, after which runners have only six weeks to catch their breath before the New Year's Day run!
