Explore the “Hidden Treasures from Old Monterey” during the inaugural Art in the Adobes festival in downtown Monterey. Many of the events will be held in the adobes that make Monterey so unique and rich in history. The three-day cultural festival will be full of exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and children activities for the next generation of artists and historians. A special VIP reception on Friday at the Cooper-Molera Adobe will kick off the weekend’s festivities.
Exhibitions
Historic adobes will be dressed up with art pieces dating from the mid-1800’s to the early 1900’s. Works from artists Leonardo Barbieri, Henry Cleenewerck, Armin Hansen and many more will be on display throughout the weekend at Casa Serrano, Colton Hall, the Larkin House, Cooper-Molera, Stevenson House and the Monterey Museum of Art.
On Saturday Old Fisherman’s Wharf will transform into an open art gallery exhibiting murals, painting, pottery, photography and providing a stage for performances. Visitors can also enjoy live music, oyster shucking, squid cleaning and a beach clean-up.
Lectures
Learn more about the history of art in Monterey during lectures at Few Memorial Hall near Colton Hall at 10am and 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s topics include “When Monterey was Modern: The Peninsula’s Early Art Colony and its Place in California Art” from Crocker Art Museum’s Associate Director Scott Shields and “Up from the Ashes: The Birth of the Hotel Del Monte Art Gallery” from NPS’ Dudley Knox Library Special Collections Manager John Sanders. Sunday’s topics include “On the Monterey Trail of Jo Mora” from Curator Peter Hill and “Women’s Work in the Early Central Coast Art Scene” from CSUMB’s Chair of the Visual & Public Art department Lila Staples.
Demonstrations
See how artists create prints during a demonstration at 11am Saturday in the Cooper-Molera garden. Monterey County local artists Justin Ward and Beverly Corbett will show 19th century etching techniques and printing processes that use real leaves, blooms and branches.
Children’s Activities
MY Museum holds a special afternoon of fun on Saturday and Sunday with Chippie de Munk: The Great Inventor. The lovable character will sit down with tiny tots for story time and help them create a masterpiece of their own.
Families can stop in at Elkin Park near the Monterey Museum of Art on Saturday where several Victorian and nature inspired art activities will get the youngsters’ imaginations flowing. On Sunday the Cooper-Molera Adobe opens its doors for a family-friendly paining and collage experience taught by locals Erin Lee Gafill and Tom Birmingham. Kids can create their own art, and their piece may even be included in the traveling children’s art show “Championing the Arts.”
