Monterey County offers a visual journey through many eras and styles of art. Works on display at galleries throughout the county, sometimes tucked in surprising places, range from classical masters to modern sculpture.
The artistic scene stretches from Big Sur in the south, where the spirit of Henry Miller lives on in galleries nestled in redwood canyons and atop mountains with sweeping vistas of the Pacific, to the industrial setting of Sand City in the north, a secret haven for artists who work on a large scale. Marina has a sculpture garden amid the live oaks and chaparral. The Monterey Museum of Art in downtown Monterey is home to works by famed artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso and fêted photographer Ansel Adams. And the Gabilan Gallery at the National Steinbeck Center holds changing exhibits which display a variety of art and cultural displays throughout the year.
Art famously abounds at galleries scattered throughout the streets and shops of Carmel, but don’t be afraid to venture off the main roads when touring Carmel galleries. Independent galleries tucked behind hidden courtyards and side streets are true treasures, and you may even get the opportunity to meet the artist and buy her art directly. The Carmel Art Association Gallery, the oldest in Carmel, features the work of more than 120 professional local artists and is dedicated to presenting only the finest work for sale by artists living on the Monterey Peninsula. Around the corner in Pacific Grove, galleries housed in turn-of-the-century structures exhibit art that runs the gamut from vivid watercolors and striking photographs to intricate jewelry and delicate blown glass pieces.
