Triathlon at Pacific Grove

September 10—12, 2010

Elite and amateur triathletes will flock to Pacific Grove the second weekend in September to participate in one of the most scenic triathlons in the world: the Triathlon at Pacific Grove.

Weather in Pacific Grove is ideal for a triathlon, cool and misty at dawn with sun by mid-morning and an average high temperature in the mid-70s. The course begins with the famous "Kelp Crawl" swim, and swimmers are warned that "assistance from Sea Otters or Sea Lions is strictly prohibited." The cycling and running courses lie along the Pacific Grove coastline, with a breathtaking view for participants to admire as they push themselves to the limit while admiring crowds cheer them on.

Seminars, Expo and Parties

The warmup begins on Friday, September 10, when participants can register, attend swim clinics, meetings and pasta parties, get an orientation for the Olympic Course, and check out triathlon-related merchandise in the exposition area.

Olympic Course Events

The Olympic Course events will take place on Saturday, September 11th. Opening ceremonies kick off at 7am. Amateurs, Junior Elite and Elite athletes will each start separately and compete amongst themselves. Elite athletes will be competing for a $20,000 cash purse, which will be given out at the Olympic Awards Ceremony at 3pm. Relay teams, consisting of a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner, will also compete on Saturday. The exposition will be open from 7am to 4pm.

Sprint Course Events

Sprint Course athletes will have their day in the sun (and mist) on Sunday, September 12th. Opening ceremonies are at 7am, athletes take to the water at 7:15 am, and the awards ceremony will take place from 11 to 12pm.

Lodging and Dining

You can stay just steps away from the triathlon course at one of Pacific Grove's inns, hotels, motels or bed and breakfasts. Some offer suites with kitchenettes in case you prefer to prepare your own carbo-loading meals, while others offer a full buffet breakfast that will ensure you are fueled up for your event.

Many of Pacific Grove's finest restaurants are also located within one or two blocks of the Triathlon at Pacific Grove course. Plan ahead and make a reservation; your competitors in the race are sure to be there!

Pacific Grove offers much more to do than just the Triathlon at Pacific Grove. See our Pacific Grove Itinerary for ideas on where to eat and what to see – and ways to keep your fans busy while you prep for the race.
