Travelers to Monterey County should note road work on scenic Highway 1 has resulted in temporary restrictions to accessing the region. Big Sur and Monterey County businesses and attractions remain 100 percent operational and accessible via Highway 1 in most circumstances, or via alternate routes.
Highway 1 at Rocky Creek is now open for all traffic from 7 am until 9 pm with one-way signalized traffic control until all temporary repairs have been finished. Roadwork will occur seven days a week, twenty four hours a day. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time. However, full overnight closures will take place five nights a week Sundays through Thursdays.
The hours for full closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek will be 9 pm to 7 am beginning Thursday, Oct. 11 through May 2013, Caltrans officials have announced (times are subject to change).
Alternate routes to the area include Highways 101, 68 and 46. Click here for maps. Travelers can call 888-836-0866 / 800-MONTEREY for details on these detours. For the latest road conditions, visit www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/projects.
