There is something special about a road trip along the Big Sur coast, where the rugged mountains and redwood forests meet the Pacific Ocean. We found the experience to be so magical that we created the Big Sur Road Trip Audio Guide, a CD/digital download to play in your car while driving along Highway 1.

On a trip where the journey is the destination, here are 5 places that we think you simply cannot miss!

Point Lobos State Reserve (Mile Marker 70.2)

Visit the place that inspired the quote, "the greatest meeting of land and water in the world." Bonus: It’s also one of two places on Earth to witness Monterey Cypress trees in the wild (the other being Pebble Beach just a few miles north).

Bixby Creek Bridge (Mile Marker MON 59.8)

No Big Sur Road Trip is complete without a photo op at the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge, famous for its appearances in movies, commercials and our current binge-watching pleasure, HBO’s Big Little Lies.

McWay Falls (Mile Marker MON 35.9)

An Instagram favorite. Experience an 80-foot waterfall cascading along the cliffs and onto the beach below.

New Camaldoli Hermitage (Mile Marker MON 22.5)

Life can be pretty rushed these days. Here’s a place where time seems to slow down. Take in the sweeping views – and the peaceful quiet – from 1300 feet above Highway 1. And don’t forget to support the monastery by stopping by their gift shop, famous for delicious homemade fruitcakes and Holy Granola.

Sand Dollar Beach (Mile Marker MON 13.8)

Hunt for jade and serpentine rocks on the largest sandy beach in Big Sur.
