Update: Highway One is now 100% open throughout Monterey County. Read this post for more information. As of Sunday, March 27, 2011, Big Sur is temporarily inaccessible via Highway One from both the north and the south.

Highway One Closure Information

On Sunday, March 27, a mudslide temporarily closed Highway One in both directions at Alder Creek, which is just south of the town of Gorda and 38 miles south of Big Sur. On March 29, Caltrans reported that this segment of Highway One would be reopened in early April. As previously reported, on March 16 a 40-ft. section of Highway 1 collapsed near the Rocky Point Bridge, 12 miles south of Carmel. On March 29, Caltrans reported that this segment of Highway One would be opened in mid- to late April.

Alternate Routes

Currently the only road to and from Big Sur is Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, which begins at Mission Road in Jolon (near King City) and ends at Highway One four miles south of Lucia. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road passes through Fort Hunter Liggett. Drivers are asked to show their identification, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Passengers should also have ID with them. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, while quite scenic, is narrow and winding with precipitous drops and blind curves. It sometimes closes due to weather conditions. Please refer to the Los Padres National Forest website for information on current conditions at Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

Big Sur Businesses Are Still Open!

Visitors should note that all Big Sur businesses, state parks and beaches are 100 percent operational. Concerts and other events scheduled to take place in Big Sur may be rescheduled; call ahead for details. Regional spring events, such as May 1st's Big Sur Marathon (possibly using a modified course) and May 19th's Amgen Tour of California, will continue.
