Friday The Big Sur Food and Wine Festival kicks off its first year with some fabulous daytime wine tastings and great winemaker dinners at the Redwood Grill at Fernwood Resort, the Big Sur Roadhouse, the Big Sur Bakery and The Restaurant at Deetjen's Inn. Reserve online, or call 831-667-0800. The Salinas First Fridays Art Walk has live music, great art, tasty refreshments - and best of all, it's free. 5pm-8pm, 100-300 blocks of Main Street and surrounding blocks (look for the yellow silk flags). Catch a preview performance of the Hyperion Project winner "La Honda," a film-noir style story of a father and son in love with the same woman, put on by Pacific Repertory Theatre at the Golden Bough Playhouse in Carmel. 7:30pm, tickets are $16-$35. Call 831-622-0100 to reserve. Jose's on Wave Street in Monterey rocks with Advanced Man early Genesis-influenced locals Teen Inc, and the droney ambient Oakland indie artists Alright Class. 9pm, $5. Darktown Rounders bring their quirky, often funny roots music to Fernwood Resort in Big Sur tonight. 9:30pm, free. Saturday The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District wants you to take a hike! Get a free tour of Mill Creek Preserve, a local park with restricted access that few people ever get to see. Saturday's free 5.5 mile hike includes a walk through redwood groves, great views of the ocean, and a minimal elevation gain of 230 feet. 10am, free. Register online under "Free Guided Hikes" (look for the one titled "Tremendous Trees of Mill Creek") to get directions. The final day of the Big Sur Food and Wine Festival has five great tastings and panels, as well as great winemaker dinners at Big Sur Bakery, Deetjens Inn, Esalen Institute and a great benefit dinner at Ventana Inn Restaurant. The Sunset Center in Carmel takes on a very different vibe tonight as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees WAR blow the roof off with songs like Low Rider and Why Can't We Be Friends. 8pm. Tickets are $47, $58 and $67. Jose's gets loud tonight with Pleatherface, 3 Dead and Kicked In. 9pm, $5. Santa Cruz's Danjuma & Onola play light, danceable Afrobeat that will make you feel like summer never ended. They play Fernwood in Big Sur tonight. 9pm, free. Sunday The Listening Place Reader's Theater performs a live reading of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest and The Remarkable Rocket at the Monterey Museum of Art La Mirada. 1:30pm. $5 for the general public, free for MMA members.
