Description:
EVENT:
James Perry, Executive Director of Monterey County Historical Society will give a free presentation at Pacific Grove Art Center called, “Monterey County History: Through the Lens of Pat Hathaway”
There is also an exhibit from March 3rd through April 27th of 70 historic images (1885-2010) and a collection of cameras representing the evolution of photography (from 1890 – 2010) from the Pat Hathaway Collection at the Pacific Grove Art Center which is open on afternoons Wednesday – Sunday.
According to James Perry, Executive Director of the Monterey County Historical Society, “I am excited to share with the audience on April 1st some of the highlights from the Pat Hathaway Collection and discuss the exhibit on display at the Pacific Grove Art Center through April 27th. What has touched me the most are the conversations I have had about the memories people share of Pat Hathaway and life and community on the Monterey Peninsula in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. We look forward to seeing many of the community here.”
MORE INFORMATION:
ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHER PAT HATHAWAY:
Mr. Pat Hathaway, raised in Pacific Grove, assembled one of California’s largest privately held image collections. Upon his return to the Monterey Peninsula in 1968 after serving in the Vietnam war, Pat immediately began collecting historical images and also focused on his own passion for photography. In fact, his first exhibition was here at the Pacific Grove Art Center in 1968 where he was also in residence. Before passing away suddenly in January 2021, Pat managed to assemble over 80,000 historical images, mostly of the Monterey Peninsula, Salinas Valley & California dating to the 1850s. His love of photography was immense as evidenced by over 470,000 of his own images chronicling over five decades of daily life on the Monterey Peninsula. His collection is now preserved in the vaults of the Monterey County Historical Society.
ABOUT THE PAT HATHAWAY COLLECTION DONATION TO THE MONTEREY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:
The huge unrivaled collection of historical images collected by the late Pacific Grove photographer, Pat Hathaway, was awarded to the Monterey County Historical Society, located in Salinas in January 2022. Pat Hathaway died January 6, 2021 without a will, which meant his estate – and the future of more than 80,000 photos he’d collected over his lifetime – went through probate court for a judge to decide what would happen to his outstanding collection.
On December 24th, the court agreed with conservator Kent Seavey’s proposal to gift the entire collection to the Monterey County Historical Society. James Perry, executive director of the Monterey County Historical Society, said the Hathaway collection of photographs, maps and images going back to the 1840's, is “way too important to stay locked up in a vault.”
ABOUT THE MONTEREY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:
The Monterey County Historical Society was founded in December 1933. According to founding historical society documents, it was initially a small core of aging civic leaders who based their efforts to establish a historical society upon a deep concern for the preservation of a rapidly disappearing history of what they knew in those days as “Old Monterey County." Our image collection contains over 100,000 images and date from 1870 through the present documenting the development of a region that has been inhabited for 10,000 years.
