It all started with a man and a woman who wanted to make wine. Tom and Jarman Lowder from Alabama dreamed of a planting and farming a small estate vineyard and olive grove where they could produce limited production wine and olive oil. When Jarman was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s, the desire to make that dream a reality grew. In 2006, The Lowder Family purchased the historic 400 acre Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley. After planting 18 acres of Burgundian wines, several with Dijon clones, in 2007 and 2008, Holman Ranch produced its first vintage of Pinot Noir in 2009. Thirteen of the eighteen acres were planted to Pinot Noir with a mixture of 7 clones including Pommard, Swan, 667 and 828 (most popular clone for making champagne). They also planted 100 olive trees and make extra virgin certified olive oil as well. By 2011, they opened our first tasting room in Carmel Valley Village to pour our organic and sustainably certified Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Rose of Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir. Unfortunately, Jarman succumbed to complications of her illness. Holman Ranch and the wine produced started as an homage to a dream, so the work continued. After building an underground wine cave to produce their estate wine completely on site, the Lowder’s dream was finally realized. They partnered with the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation to help find a cure for this disease that affects so many. They now proudly pour Holman Ranch and Jarman wines together at the Holman Ranch Tasting Patio. Both wines are made completely from estate grown, sustainably and organically grown grapes made in their underground wine caves.
