Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo will be on view from February 5 to April 19, 2026. Monterey Museum of Art is the only museum in Northern California to host this national touring exhibition.
Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo reveals a broader picture of the American experience by presenting artworks and life stories of three trailblazing Japanese American women in dialogue with each other for the first time. Curated by Dr. ShiPu Wang of the University of California, Merced, this exhibition spans eight decades (pre-WW2, the period of incarceration, and post-WW2) and reveals the range and depth of these artists’ oeuvres and connections that have been previously unexplored.
