McWay Falls

McWay Falls

Nestled within Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, McWay Falls is one of Big Sur’s most majestic natural wonders. This rare tidefall—a waterfall that flows directly into the Pacific Ocean—plunges 80 ft from granite cliffs onto a secluded cove, creating a postcard-perfect scene that draws travelers from around the world. Located right off Highway 1, McWay Falls is a must-see stop on any Big Sur road trip.

Easily accessible via a short, scenic walk on the McWay Falls Overlook Trail, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs and the graceful ribbon of the falls. While beach access is prohibited to protect this fragile ecosystem, the overlook offers an unforgettable perspective—especially at sunset, when golden light dances across the waves.

Parking & Restrooms

Parking is available in the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park lot, located just off Highway 1. The day-use fee is typically $10 per vehicle, which helps support park maintenance and conservation. Restrooms are available near the parking lot.

Limited free parking may also be found in designated roadside pullouts along Highway 1, but these fill quickly. Do not park illegally—vehicles parked in no-parking zones are subject to ticketing and towing.

If the lot is full, consider returning later or exploring nearby stops, such as Partington Cove or the trails at Limekiln State Park. Responsible parking helps preserve the beauty and safety of Big Sur’s rugged coastline.
