The History and Heritage of Monterey County
Throughout the county, Monterey has a rich and complex history, from the time of its original inhabitants, the Ohlone (formerly Costanoan), Esselen and Salinan groups, to the time of the first California Constitutional Convention at Colton Hall in 1849. Monterey County is loaded with sites that are crucial to every era of California’s history.

Monterey Bay Aquarium
Dedicated to marine research and ocean conservation, the oceanfront Monterey Bay Aquarium is renowned for its interactive exhibits and ability to present marine life on a truly grand scale. The former sardine cannery is now a top attraction on Monterey’s Cannery Row, with over 35,000 creatures representing over 550 sea life and marine species. Key exhibits include the Kelp Forest, the Open Sea and the Sea Otters (of course!). The Aquarium's newest exhibit Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean is not to be missed, showcasing the largest collection of deep-sea animals in North America.

Pinnacles National Park
The first 2,500 acres of the rugged Pinnacles were made a national monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Since 1908, the monument significantly increased in size to 26,000 acres and in 2013 President Barack Obama designated the expansive terrain as a national park.

Carmel Beach

Located next to Carmel-By-the-Sea, you’ll also have plenty of nearby options for lodging and dining, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing day by the ocean.

After Hours Activities
When the sun sets, Monterey County transforms into a vibrant scene filled with lively entertainment, romantic outings and cozy spots to unwind. The heart of Monterey’s nightlife is found on lively Alvarado St. and Cannery Row. In other parts of the County, you will find craft breweries, comedy clubs and intimate concert venues along with a host of other options to paint the town red!
Dust Bowl Brewery
The Monterey Tap Depot is conveniently located on the Monterey Recreation Trail just steps from the famous Fisherman’s Wharf. Craft beer fans will enjoy 24 taps amidst a social vibe. Bar rails, communal seating and lounge chairs adorn the interior, while an outdoor patio offers fire pits, heaters, picnic tables, and easy access to the Wedo’s Tacos resident food truck. Once a bustling train station in the 1930s, this location is aptly named the Tap Depot. First-come, first-served, no reservations at this location.
