Join Library and Museums Director Brian Edwards as we explore inside and outside Colton Hall and the Old Jail at night, and hear some of the history of Old Monterey on Wednesday, October 29, 6pm-7:30pm. Appropriate for teens and adults. The tour is free but space is limited - registration required.
The Old Jail is the site of several notorious cases, including Matt Tarpey and Anastacio Garcia. A limited number of EMF meters will be available for people to borrow during the walking tour.
About Colton Hall and the Old Jail
Colton Hall was built in 1849 as the first town hall and public school in Alta California, but has also been used as a courthouse, police station, library, quarantine hospital during Spanish Flu, YMCA, along with other uses. Colton Hall opened as a museum in 1949. The Old Jail was built in 1854, and active between April 22nd, 1855 through July 31st 1959. In 1960, the Old Jail was added to the Colton Hall museum site.
