Western Flyer Foundation

The Western Flyer Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Moss Landing, California, dedicated to inspiring curiosity through marine research, education, community outreach, and the integration of science and the arts. The historic Western Flyer, chartered by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts for their landmark 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition, now serves as a working research vessel and floating classroom. Operated by the Foundation, the vessel supports scientific research, hands-on educational programs, and public engagement that foster environmental stewardship and a deeper understanding of our oceans. By bringing together scientists, students, educators, artists, and local communities, the Foundation honors the legacy of Steinbeck and Ricketts while inspiring future generations to explore, protect, and appreciate marine ecosystems through collaboration, discovery, and lifelong learning.
