Purple sea urchin populations have exploded along much of California's coast in recent years, creating vast "urchin barrens" where kelp forests once thrived. Without healthy kelp forests, countless marine species lose essential habitat, and coastal ecosystems become less resilient. Commercial harvest of purple sea urchins is emerging as one tool that can help reduce urchin densities while creating new economic opportunities for California fishermen.
At the Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust booth, attendees will have the opportunity to sample fresh California purple sea urchin, learn about its flavor and culinary uses, and hear directly from marine scientists and fisheries professionals about the role sustainable harvest can play in restoring kelp ecosystems.
Scientists and educators from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories will be on hand to explain the ecological challenges facing California's kelp forests, discuss current restoration efforts, and answer questions about the science behind purple sea urchin management.
