"Though Lost to Sight, In Memory Dear" Opening on October 9th

“Though Lost to Sight, In Memory Dear” Opening in the Casa Gutierrez Community Art Gallery on October 9th

Monterey State Historic Park is debuting a new exhibit in the Casa Gutierrez Community Art Gallery (590 Calle Principal, Monterey) titled “Though Lost to Sight, In Memory Dear: An Exploration of Memento Mori and Posthumous Portraiture” on October 9th. The exhibit will showcase the park’s unique collection of posthumous portraits, hair wreaths, and hair jewelry that all tell the unique story of the people they belonged to. Many of these objects have never been exhibited and have come out of storage for this new exhibit. Exhibited together they weave a tale of family, love, loss, and societal views on death from the late colonial period through the Victorian era.

An opening reception will take place on October 8th from 5pm-7pm before the exhibit officially opens on Friday October 9th. Casa Guiterrez Gallery is available to visit on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am – 4pm.
