“Shine, Perishing Republic”
“Shine, Perishing Republic” is a poem Jeffers wrote over one hundred years ago and published in his breakthrough book Roan Stallion, Tamar and Other Poems (1925). This year's festival will consider the meaning and legacy of this prophetic poem, as well as the fraught connection between art and politics. Take a poetic break in one of the most beautiful seaside villages in California and learn about the impact that Robinson Jeffers, poet of California, had on America at a critical time in our history. Enjoy the annual sunset celebration at Tor House on Friday; a Saturday of fascinating talks about Jeffers, Carmel, and America 100 years ago; culminating in a party of wine, food, and music with I Cantori de Carmel performing a new composition by Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli, based on Jeffers’ poem “Carmel Point.” It’s a not-to-be-missed weekend. Then stay a while and enjoy October in Carmel-by-the-Sea. You deserve it!
