Jabberwock Bed and Breakfast Inn

Welcome to the Jabberwock Inn in beautiful Monterey.

Our home was originally built in 1911 for Eva and Wilbur George. They built the house as their weekend, holiday and summer home. And they built it large enough to accommodate friends and family who would venture with them to enjoy the beauty of the California coast. We are glad they did… so that we can now share it with you.

The Inn is located in the quaint neighborhood of New Monterey which developed around the home as the Monterey Fishing and Canning business boomed. Overlooking the Monterey Bay, we are just 5 blocks up the hill from Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Our hill is quite steep and provides the Inn with beautiful views of the Monterey Bay from many of our guest rooms and public spaces.

The Inn is a fine example of the American Craftsman style of architecture which was developing at the time the Inn was being built. With its large dormer windows, multiple roof lines, and overhanging eves with exposed rafters, the designer harkened the look and feel of a Swiss Chalet. Observe the large turret that houses two of our bedrooms. The interior layout of the home is very similar to the way it was originally built with the exception of the many bathrooms that were added to make the bed and breakfast more comfortable for its guests.

The grounds of the Inn are a constant work in progress. We are shaded by wonderful Sycamore trees on the front side of the house and Monterey Cypress on the street side. The Cypresses can be seen in a photo dated 1938 and they were nearly as tall then as they are today. There is a wonderful Redwood tree know as the Tumtum Tree …the namesake for our newest room. Olive trees and Oak trees make a beautiful grove in the backyard and they are home to many wondrous creatures.

Our Bocce court pays tribute to the Italian heritage of the area and adds a place for outdoor fun for families and friends. It also serves as a great space to host celebrations and reunions.

Breakfast is a great time of day at the Jabberwock. The smells of fresh brewed coffee and homemade breakfasts are a great way to wake up and start your day. This is also a great time to plan your next adventure. There is plenty to see and do nearby and we are happy to discuss your interests and help plan your perfect day.

Make new friends or join old ones each afternoon for wine and hors d’oeuvres on our beautiful sun porch. Recount the day’s adventures and discuss plans for tomorrow or just relax by the fire and figure out the perfect place for dinner.
