Every year a majestic purple phenomenon takes over the rocky coastline along Pacific Grove’s Ocean View Boulevard. Known as the ‘purple carpet’ the magenta ice plant or drosanthemum floribundum fully blooms and spreads its way down the shoreline and spills into the turquoise Pacific Ocean for a truly magical spectacle.
When can I see the Purple Carpet?
The best time to see the ice plant bloom is early April through May. The flowers usually open about midday and close in the evenings. Pick a sunny day as they remain closed when it is cold.
Where is the best place to see the Purple Carpet?
Start at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove and take the scenic drive along Ocean View Boulevard (or the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail) towards Pebble Beach. The best stretches of the bloom can be found between Lovers Point and Asilomar State Beach.
Be sure to pack your camera and sunglasses as the neon magenta is just that dazzling!
